I’m giving up on men!

Well, not all men. Just some of the men I encounter on dating sites like Bumble and Match. Like thousands of women of a certain age, I haven’t given up on love…yet.

I’m in my sixties, my kids are grown, and I am now a grandmother living in the UK. I have great friends and a good social life, but a year on from the end of a 15-year relationship, I decided I was ready to dip my toe back in the dating pond. Am I mad? Probably. But, ever the romantic I signed up to several dating apps, and was prepared to cast my net wide — up to 60 miles radius — to catch one of those ‘plenty of fish’ I keep hearing about.

The women

First of all I checked out the competition. I was impressed how many of the women looked sassy, and bright, and beautiful, and had taken the trouble to answer the endless questions about themselves and what they are looking for. I realised I would have to up my game. Make sure my profile picture gave the right message. Smiley and natural, not filtered, and most of all recent. (Okay, so admit, I tweaked my profile picture a teensy bit to whiten my teeth. But that’s all. Honest.) I added a few other photos, and thought long and hard how to describe myself. It took time, but when I pressed the ‘save’ button for the final time, I was reasonably happy with the me I was presenting to the world.
